At the March 5, 2007 Montpelier Energy Town Meeting, 150 citizens took steps toward reducing their personal energy consumption and climate emissions while helping the city chart an ambitious sustainable energy future. Many of us submitted action pledges, posted here to inspire further action.

  •  try to carpool to City Hall.
  •  go from CFL bulbs to LEDs.
  •  use reusable mugs.
  •  start my own garden.
  •  change some more light bulbs; do some more reading.
  •  attend meetings of the Local Energy Generation action team.
  •  join the transportation action team.
  •  get insulation quotes to insulate my home.
  •  turn down my heat.
  •  research getting a better hot water system.
  •  discuss this evening's energy meeting with my husband.
  •  stop putting compost in the trash.
  •  go back through files on Montpelier District Energy.
  •  meet to develop Montpelier District Energy.
  •  try to influence my son's energy use
  •  continue working with the lightbulb exchange team
  •  walk to the co-op and convince my landlord to upgrade to efficient appliance.
  •  get canvas shopping bags
  •  stop using paper or plastic shopping bags
  •  begin to make greywater plans for my home
  •  cut my water and sewer use considerably.
  •  turn my thermostat down another degree and put my long johns back on.
  •  walk or bike to work four days a week.
  •  drive less; ride a bike more.
  •  try to fix my storm door.
  •  figure out a more sustainable alternative to my ancient oil-fired furnace.
  •  see about retrofit.
  •  carpool or bus at least twice a week.
  •  do less with less.
  •  turn down my thermostat to 60*.
  •  look into adding more insulation to my home.
  •  eat locally grown vegetables.
  •  buy as many fluorescent bulbs as will match our light fixtures.
  •  do an inventory of bulbs to switch out to fluorescent.
  •  speak with Green Mountain Power about real-time pricing for the kwhr
  •  switch business and home to biofuel.
  •  unplug the TV at night.
  •  work on having SR meals site compost food waste.
  •  explore on internet a low-usage dimmer bulb.
  •  look at energy star refrigerators.
  •  work on hydro projects.
  •  go to town meeting.
  •  work on micro-hydro for our condo.
  •  vote! (for a school board candidate who will support walking and biking to school)
  •  install low-flow showerheads, apply for CVAC weatherization program, and reconsider a pellet stove.
  •  talk to 2nd graders about efficiency.
  •  carpool more.
  •  research bus route and carpool info.
  •  either take the bus or carpool with another individual or group.
  •  start the process of getting renewable energy in my home, and work to make it more efficient.
  •  install energy improvements at home.
